Every October, I celebrate my wedding anniversary with my high school sweetheart—now husband. Five years ago, on 10-20-20, we had a private elopement ceremony on the breathtaking shores of Gunflint Lake, nestled deep within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). At the time, I had never even heard of the Gunflint Trail. But as soon as we arrived, it felt like we had discovered a little slice of heaven.

When we were deciding where to elope, the North Shore offered endless options for saying “I do” surrounded by nature’s beauty. From Duluth to Two Harbors, Tofte, Lutsen, Grand Marais, and even further up into the BWCAW, there’s no shortage of magical spots. Planning and researching felt overwhelming at times—until I felt a pull deep in my soul to explore the Gunflint Trail. We eventually chose to stay at Gunflint Lodge & Outfitters, and it was perfect.

We drove over six hours from southeastern Minnesota, just the two of us and our two best friends. Along the way, we made a mini-moon out of the experience—staying in Duluth and taking in the sights along the North Shore. It was the most unforgettable adventure, and I’m forever grateful we chose this place to begin our married life.

If you’re considering a North Shore elopement or wedding, here are a few tips to help make your day just as magical as mine:

Location

Whether you’re booking a resort with on-site wedding options or pitching a tent in one of the area’s beautiful state parks, do your research ahead of time. The North Shore is expansive, and it’s important to plan for drive times between your ceremony, photo locations, and reception (if you’re having one). Especially during peak seasons, traffic can get backed up—so allow plenty of cushion time in your schedule!

Vendors

If you’re hiring a wedding planner, florist, photographer, or glam squad, read reviews, browse portfolios, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Find vendors who align with your vision and your budget. And remember: it’s okay to splurge on a few things that truly matter to you.

At Gunflint Lodge and Outfitters, we made reservations at their on-site restaurant, Justine’s, and enjoyed the most delicious dinner to celebrate becoming husband and wife. Whether you opt for a fancy dinner, a lakeside picnic, or a cozy cabin meal, make sure to plan something that feels special to you.

Whether you’re planning a full wedding or a private elopement, Duluth and the North Shore make an unforgettable backdrop for your love story—year-round. But in my humble opinion, the most magical time to visit is between late September and early November. The crisp air, vibrant fall colors, and peaceful atmosphere are unmatched.
